Huh! I had no idea that Neal Stephenson was referencing a nursery rhyme. And moreover that MAD knew about it too.

Yeah, you know, I'm glad you mentioned it. When I started reading Crypto, I had such a hard time NOT getting distracted by the guy's name. Spud had a CD of kid songs, and Bobby Shaftoe was one of them. EVERY time I saw the name Shaftoe, that stupid tune started going around in my head. HE'LL COME BACK AND MARRY ME...blah blah blah.
