Huh! I had no idea that Neal Stephenson was referencing a nursery rhyme. And moreover that MAD knew about it too.

Huh, I thought everyone did! The tune I know is something like "Reuben Reuben," although I assume there's a wide variety of tunes (a lovely one here, and whole sets of pipe tunes here, and, as I look, an interesting comparision (with polka and sword dance notations!) of US and UKversions).

Yeah, you know, I'm glad you mentioned it. When I started reading Crypto, I had such a hard time NOT getting distracted by the guy's name. Spud had a CD of kid songs, and Bobby Shaftoe was one of them. EVERY time I saw the name Shaftoe, that stupid tune started going around in my head. HE'LL COME BACK AND MARRY ME...blah blah blah.

Sorry. Here, listen to this one (http://zusty.zogblaster.com/gloop/Spike Jones and His City Slickers - Yes, We Have No Bananas.mp3) instead (I wanted to post Barney Google, but I couldn't find it).
