I have so much internetty catching up to do, now that I'm done with classes (my final paper came off okay, I think. Sigh).
Anyhow, as you all well know, I never must miss a chance to heap scorn on Linklater.
Scanner Darkly isn't looking so well. I just love it. Glee is mine full measure. I mean, look at these allegations. It tells, it doesn't show. People mostly sit around spouting dialog. This, THIS is what the visual technique was for, obviously! To make people sitting in cars and dribbling words out of their mouths SUPER AWESOME! Ah, it's beautiful.
Yeah, that hyper-time-expensive style, the one that people just start seeing past after a few seconds, because the fidelity is so high (it's sort of like low-res video, in high-res. You just learn to see the shapes and stop consciously paying attention to the style). We used the hell out of that style. You know, because it was the only way to show the trippiness! That's what PKD is about, the obvious visual trippiness. Not any sort of mental subtlety. I, Linklater, am a genius and also I never am completely misguided and am not that guy in your film class whom everyone hated because he always came to class late, stinking of pot, to show half an hour of unedited POV footage he took while walking around last week.
I guess at least a whole lot of artists got work for a while. And, bonus! A
good acting helmet! You know it's
Keanu Quality.
