Iron Man (2008), Jon Favreau. June 13, 10:20pm. View count: One.
Just to be perverse, we decided to go see the Iron Mans instead of the Hulks last night. I don't actually know how Hulk [variety: Incredible] came out, but Iron Man was pretty charming. My only problem with it was in regard to the condensation of the roles. ( I'll cut for spoilers. )
Robert Downey Jr, however, owned his part pretty hard. He essentially carried the entire movie on his back, aided, thankfully, by the director's decision to allow him to ad-lib (which he obviously can do pretty goddamn well). His natural speech and overlapping lines really made the whole movie about four notches better. Notable also were his interactions with his fanciful-yet-just-believable-enough House Computer, which were just adorable (except for one specific obnoxious gag-overplay). The natural-language computer interaction concept was completely sold by R.D.Jr's behavior and attitude toward it, and the MovieUI, having been given just the right steps toward plausibility, with this help was totally within my disbelief-containment module.
I am hoping that the next movie will, with presumably the telegraphed enemy (the character is well-set-up, I will admit), go further with Tony Stark's drinkiness. Robert Downey Jr. being too drunk to actually put on the suit would be pretty hilarious.
Oh, and I counted three to four direct Robocop references, all in a short span. The best part was the Bob Morton Can't Get the Grenade pastiche, if only because it actually (unlike the 'Tony Stark Blares 'Institutionalized' moment... why did they do that? The only good answer to that question is 'R.D.Jr chose it as something Tony Stark would like.') actually has thematic resonance.
