Sep. 9th, 2005 01:15 pmFor doctroid, I will stop watching Star Trek while knitting to answer that memelet where one explains one's interests.
And because my sense of humor is kind of in hiding right now, I will be SERIOUS.
Writing one's interests annoys me, because it's sort of a non-fluid way of replicating a conversation (instead of mentioning or referring to things as needed, you list them all out beforehand and hope someone recognises one. Because this is the INTERNET, and it's more important to know if you and someone else like single-color-channel russian photos than if you actually can TALK to each other, sheez!).
It's a pre-filtering device, which are sometimes good and sometimes bad, and it's one that depends on specific phrasing rules to work. This means that the most amusing interests are often unfindable, unless you're looking through the interests of a person you already know of. Which brings up the point, what is the interests-functionality _for_? Finding new people, or entertaining already-existing friends? It is not the venue I would use for either. Although I don't care if OTHER people do it, and I've definitely seen some fun list items.
I also cannot be arsed. Where does one draw the line? Do I like bees enough to list them, or would that be misrepresentation? I am not good at deciding which bits of me are important, and it is too much work for something that should be, if not entertaining, then Not-Work.
It makes me want to be flippant, but even THAT is too much effort.
I should note, all of those friend-network sites annoy me as well. Flickr is good because it invites content; in fact, it depends on it. And I guess it is a photo-displaying site first and a network site second. If your only content is Stuff You've Written About Yourself (or flattering things your friends have written), suddenly your system is a lot less interesting to me. Maybe we should all list each other's interests. I think that would have more meaning, in some ways.
Also I am stuck at home and kind of sad, so I am probably more cantankerous than usual.
