So, so true [may have very minor spoilers for new Dr. Who episodes]. It reminds me of the muddled lateish episodes of the Simpsons, where plot points would be tossed in any old way and left to die, because the writers weren't sure how to continue on so late in the life of the series. The difference there being that we know the Simpsons & Associates so well that it didn't hurt so much. Although it did hurt.

Things that have happened:
- I finally, finally got all my horrible homework out the door. Remaining is my final paper for Animal Cognition, which I still haven't got an idea for (we have to devise a viable experiment that hasn't been done).
- Chmmr is back from the Elecronic Eel Expo, finally.
- I got some mice from the reptile shop.

Eh. Over and out.

I think he overstates the homogeneity of the house style. Moffat managed to write a good, or at least good-enough, plot for "The Empty Child"/"The Doctor Dances", and it came across as noticeably better than RTD's stuff. I like the two-parter format a lot; unfortunately Davies wrote the other two-parters last season, and they were kind of preposterous even by Doctor Who standards. This season there are three two-part stories again, but this time Davies is only writing one of them, so I'm holding out some hope.

The problem the show has this season is pretty simple: Christopher Eccleston's gone and bad writing is consequently more noticeable when it happens. David Tennant makes an OK Doctor, though I think I'd like him better if he used his own accent, but Eccleston was spectacular--maybe the best actor ever to inhabit the role--and his performances effectively papered over a lot of script problems.

Also, that repetition of "we asexual fans" has a strange air of defensiveness to it.

Agreed, that was a bit odd.

I think the essay is chiefly about the second season, but, yeah, Empty Child was definitely pretty good.
I can't quite agree about Eccleston, personally; he rubbed me the wrong way personality-wise. But Tennant isn't doing spectacularly himself... ah, eh. I wish the good guest writers would hurry up and show themselves again.

Moffat wrote "The Girl in the Fireplace" (and peppered it with "Empty Child" callbacks), and I thought the plotting in it was pretty clever; to me the problem there was more one of character motivation.

As other people have mentioned, It felt a little like those old Star Trek episodes where a major character takes 40 minutes to fall in love for ever and ever with the guest character he just met, just so it can be really sad when she has to die or otherwise go away. The one advantage here being that at least her feelings are fairly comprehensible, given the situation.

Hmm, I could see it.
I need to work out more exactly what my problems with this stuff are. I'm sorry I'm so vague.

I read "lateish" as a "latex fetish" portmanteau. I blame you.
