"No one (I hope) is expecting The Bicycle Thief or even Attack of the Clones in a TV ad."
I don't care about the ad they're talking about here, but why DON'T we expect good ads?

odd, because I've seen some good ads, and I've noticed that good ads are more common these days... and I've read articles that suggest this is a deliberate trend, that advertisers know people ignore ads/get up during commercials/channel surf, so they *want* to capture the attention of a very fickle audience.

my point being: why does this person think we aren't expecting good ads? and especially, why does he *hope* we aren't expecting a good ad?

Well, it's really an endemic problem, I think. You see people with this idea often, in most venues of entertainment, and their argument always seems to boil down to 'it is not Shakespeare/Citizen Kane (those being about the only GOOD-stamped media that most people meme around, for some reason), so why are you expecting/hoping/praying for something more sophisticated/smart/moving?' Perhaps they haven't even really looked at today's entertainment, they just know that it's nominally 'lower' than, uh, Shakespeare, and therefore feel happy to settle for death film-cemented onto 35mm because why bother? Shakespeare is hard to understand anyway! I hate this stance, and those who espouse it.
I believe you're right to some extent, that some advertisers are not idiots. There are excellent ads out there, some even for coca-cola (seen the Baddest Ruffest british soccer ad? If no, I can upload it someplace). But... then we have the 'I am asian (TM)' Mcdonalds campaign and AAAAGH.

Maybe the "I Am Asian™" campaign can do a Vanilla Ice parody called "I'm Rice, Rice, Baby".
