(It is an overheard conversation about buying books. When I was in college I didn't buy too many (new) books either, but I would read them anyway, through borrowing or librarying. Or I would buy them used.)

I don't know how you can get by WITHOUT purchasing one book at some point in a (n American's) life. Did they go to the magic fairy school that gives you free books for all your courses? That makes a lot of assumptions about the lady in question, but Come On.

She has to be talking about buying books for pleasure-reading. Right?

Yeah, I haven't bought a new book for myself since the summer; but that's OK, because I just steal books from my younger brother when I go back home to visit. I don't read that often right now, anyway, so it isn't the end of the world.

But this absolutely floors me. You totally know that she was wearing Burberry when this was said. They probably both climed into their Ford Explorer and drove off to their expensive apartment a five-minute walk from campus, minding their step so as not to slip on the sea of empty beer cans that litters their lawn.

The only reason I know such things is because my little university is where all the rich kids from Toronto get sent: it's far enough away that they're out of their parents' hair, but not so far that they can't come back every weekend to refuel the Lexus. So it's fashion plate central. I've never seen so many high heels on the first day of school in my entire life.
