The second half of the cliffhanger Dr. Who was fairly rewarding in its slapstickitude, but I cannot help looking forward to the next one. You have to hand it to Britain for not having the temerity to change the Dalek design except extremely incrementally. Had it been an american show, apart from it not being possible in the first place, we'd've decided that the Daleks needed guns that shoot rock candy or a more elaborate hat or hydraulic stilts or something, this time around.
The teaser for next week's episode seemed to indicate that the doctor would be Captain Kirked (damn it, can't find the image; you know, where someone's torturing him and he's manacled in a cruciform position, with no shirt, and he's avidly sucking in his gut during all profile shots) up someplace. I find this somewhat alarming. But I really enjoyed how the Dalek got to yell over the beginning of the final credits (which immediately followed the teaser).

PS: There is apparently a strain of hosta called Captain Kirk. TMYK!

Your mention that the Dalek yells should have a spoiler warning for those of us who can watch the series on TV! (Of course, I'm not going to see it for another three weeks, so I don't mind that much.)

Speaking of American vs. British production values, have you by any chance watched Eddie Izzard's Dress to Kill? There's an excellent comparison not too far down from this anchor here.

Pure gold.

Hey, but it's in the next-week teaser! They've spoiled it themselves, haven't they?

I haven't seen it, but I've got it lying around someplace, I think. I do enjoy the Izzard. I will have to watch it.

I dunno, I'd be happy to see daleks precariously balanced at the top of long jhonen-vasquez spider legs. Like Zim's backpack.

Oooooh now I want to do a whole bunch of flour-sack animation tests using stiff daleks.

Some of the original plans for the '96 Fox TV movie (which went through many bizarre mutations in development hell; most of the unmade versions were worse than what we got) actually had Daleks walking around on robot spider legs.

I do get the impression that we might be seeing some different-looking Daleks in later episodes.

That was the most obvious bad-production-art solution to the Daleks' motion issues I could think of. How sad that I got it right.

The bizarre history of the Fox TV movie. You'll laugh, you'll cry. The thing opened with too much continuity-wank as it was; can you imagine what it would have been like to lead with all that stuff about the Doctor's family and his missing father?

It is hard to believe that we live in the best of all possible worlds after reading something like this.

"The BBC expressed concerns that the Master's snake form was too comical, but little could be done about it at this stage."
