Not too bad. NOW YOU
zustifer: (Ravenous Doods)
I did this again, although I rearranged the topics some. Oh, and I only wrote the interpretations in order; I didn't go back to the previous plot points to try to make them fit better. Maybe I should have. Anyhoo, the procedure remains: mp3s on random, assign what comes to these topics. If a song is completely dumb or wrong, exclude it. Feel free to give this one a go, if you're sort of not feeling terribly productive, as I am.

Opening Credits: Minor Threat - (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone
(oh noes, the tone is set! Truly, harsh realities are the name of the game.)

Protagonist Introduction Sequence: Dick Hyman - Palm Leaf Rag
(Sweet, the protagonist is a silent film star!)

Antagonist Introduction Sequence: Huun-Huur-Tu - Chiraa-Khoor
(And the antagonist has spent time in the Peruvian mountains, learning to throat-sing.)

Conflict Setup: YMO - Taiso
(the conflict is about... calisthenics? No, clearly it's an authoritarian mind-controlling society that must be smashed.)

Character Development Interlude: Warren Zevon - Detox Mansion
(Excellent, the authoritarian setting is revealed to be a rehab center. Presumably both main characters have checked in.)

Color: Amsterdam Klezmer Band - Coceck
(As good a song as any for a Doing Stuff montage. I imagine this being daily life in the rehab center. Lots of card-playing and television.)

Fight Sequence: Pixies - Isla de Encanta
(As good a song as any for a fight scene. Maybe Antagonist made fun of Protagonist's pantomimey ways.)

Antagonist's Exposition: White Hassle - Star Position
(Aww, Antagonist is lonely.)

Protagonist's Secret Shame: Damon Albarn & Michael Nyman - Boyd's Journey
(OMG, Protagonist is a SECRET CANNIBAL. I need to make this movie.)

Will They Ever Be Friends? Lenlow - Hidden Howling Bird
(Since this is a mashup, I'm going to take this as a yes. Maybe the protagonist and antagonist will get together and smash their terrible substance-free nightmare.)

Getting Things Done Montage: Pizzicato Five - Let's Spend the Night Together
(Whoa, I think the protagonist and antagonist hit it off really well.)

The Payoff: Medeski, Martin & Wood - Off The Table
(This sounds like a daring nighttime raid of some sort. Maybe they're destroying their records, or stealing all the methadone or something, in preparation for escape.)

Last-Minute Plot Twist: Plus-Tech Squeeze Box - Channel No. 17
(I'm thinking that they can't stand to leave the clinic because they will miss the Special Show or something. Can they make it to the outside?)

Wrap-up: David Wrench - World War IV
(The decision has been made: stay, but have a lot of sex before they are discovered to have done whatever it was they did before. *)

End Credits: Scott Solter plays Pattern Is Movement - In Tape Grass
(The credits play over dolly shots through the clinic's hallways, which are empty. Except at the very end, the very last room is entered, and the leads are sitting on a bed inside, holding hands.)

* This song for some reason really makes me want to animate a video for it that's about Philip K Dick's various story-universes. I've storyboarded about half of it, but it's arguable that for it to really work like I want it to, it would have to be stop motion puppetry.)

Sitting around waiting for a shirt to dry, I ran across in someone's blog a songmeme that sort of seemed to be about soundtracking the movie of one's life. It sort of sucked though, so I made a new one.

The original procedure was to put your whole music collection on shuffle and just see what comes up for however many songs in a row, but I am completely amending this to 'if it sucks, or makes no sense, find something else.' I think the point is to recontextualise music and fake up a plot out of nothing. At least that's what it is for me.

My results:

Opening Credits: Ali Farka Touré & Toumani Diabaté - Hawa Dolo
Protagonist Introduction Sequence: Force of Nature - Nightshift (I picture this playing over a lot of really boring day-to-day actions. Maybe like three minutes of doing dishes.)
Antagonist Introduction: Medeski, Martin & Wood - Sequel (man, this movie is too 'cool.')
Conflict Setup: Pixies - The Sad Punk (This movie is about mismatched lifepaths or something?)
Character Development Interlude: Jean-Jacques Perrey - The Saturn Ambassador (I am picturing a puppet show)
The Love Interest: Dead Kennedys - I am the Owl (we totally have a punk/not punk conflict here. Maybe I left the brotherhood or something.)
Fight Sequence: Hideki Naganuma - The Concept of Love (Hooray)
Antagonist's Exposition: Rinken Band - Shichiguwachi Eisa (Aww, the antagonist is Okinawan! He misses his low-key homeland, but life has forced him to become a punk super-spy.)
Preparation for Battle Montage: The Smiths - What Difference Does It Make (No one sees the point of this battle!)
Pre-Battle Dancefight: Joshua Morse - Medical Insurance (This is an excellent dancefight song.)
Ultimate Battle: Hepcat - Yoko Zuna (Maybe everyone is just sitting around and listening to this song instead of actually fighting.)
Aftermath and Resolution: Eartha Kitt - Monotonous (Everyone is sick of this movie. Even Eartha Kitt.)
End Credits: Devo - Pity You [E-Z Listening version]

Oh yeah, you all should do like 343 and make self-portrait mixes. Post them here if you want, so long as you do it.
Although, query, would it be more manageable if I did something like mandate fewer than five songs? For brevity and such?

Anticyclone reminded me of the vast array of archetypes and levels of amusement inherent in muppets, and I was idly trying to think of a muppet that would make a good avatar. So, share my bemusement and pointless woolgathering; put your hand inside the puppet head. Name a muppet that you'd use, yourself, for an avatar. If it's a Muppet Show muppet, I can screengrab you some images of it, because I have the boxset and some other episodes lying around (and in case you don't know how I love screencapping, yesterday I was checking one of Delia Deetz's horrible outfits by flipping through my Beetlejuice screenshots directory (1.5 gigs), instead of actually checking the dvd). So make me do some muppet searching. It'll be great. And you have an excuse to think of the muppet that best represents you, quiz-free.
If it's Sesame Street, though, it's just you and youtube.

(PS: I keep using this avatar for puppet-related posts because Miguel Ferrer is at his most muppetlike in this frame of Robocop. You can just see his head flapping up and down.)
(PPS: He is uttering the 'uh' phoneme of 'Fuck Jones,' or, in the TV edit, 'Forget Jones.' The facial expression is a lot more understandable if you know he's saying 'Fuck.' But I do enjoy the TV edit a lot. Regardless, that frame shows confluence of several amusing things (puppety Miguel Ferrer, bastardised-for-TV dialog, hilarious overly cocky scornful devil-may-care expression).)

I had this idea for an LJ quizmeme that struck me as being pretty appropriate.
The thing:
Make a mix representing your love life (can also be your emotional life, or anything you really feel like doing). It should be normal cd-length (10-25 songs), unless you want to do a two-cd set or what have you. Ideally it should be a mix you could actually make (you have/own the pertinent songs). You don't have to do one person per song or anything; you can expand a drawn-out life-period or compact a boring one. I think the important part is that it be chronological and that it make some sense to you, at least. So once you've done that, you can post the tracklist and annotate if desired.

Here's mine: )

NowpleaseIbegyou join in at least a BIT, so I will have not done this in VAIN! Although honestly I kind of wanted to do it anyway.
